Autumn Flu and Covid Programme 2023/24

Both the Flu and Covid vaccination season has started earlier than originally announced due to rises of both diseases in the UK.

The vaccinating of patients at the surgery will only be open to does who are classed as clinically @ risk as confirmed by the JCVI with no exceptions.

Definition of clinically at risk as below:

  • Residents in a care home for older adults
  • All adults aged 65 years and over
  • Persons aged 6 months to 64 years in a clinical risk group, as laid out in the Immunisation Green Book, COVID-19 Chapter (Green Book), Immunisations Green Book Influenza Chapter (Green book).
  • Frontline health and social care workers
  • Persons aged 12 to 64 years who are household contacts (as defined in the Green Book) of people with immunosuppression
  • Persons aged 16 to 64 years who are carers (as defined in the Green Book) and staff working in care homes for older adults.
  • Children aged 2 or 3 years on 31 August 2023 (born between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2021) for Flu vaccination.

The Practice will be running dedicated clinics for all eligible patients over the coming weeks and invitations via SMS messaging to patients have already started to go out. We ask all who are eligible and have received their invites to either book yourselves in using the link provided in the SMS message or by calling the practice between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

Patients aged 18 plus and within a clinical risk groups will be offered both the Covid and Flu vaccination at the same time, so you will only need to book one appointment if having both either or. Patients under 18 will be offered the nasal flu vaccination unless clinically contraindicated, where we will be able to offer an alternative but only if clinically they are unable to have the nasal vaccine.

If you are aged 65 or over, please be aware invitations for your age group have not yet been sent and will be sent in the coming week so please bear with us and await your invitation.

Patients who are classed as Housebound, will be called to confirm if they wish to take up the offer of the vaccinations and will then be contacted at a later date to confirm when they will be immunised at their place of residence. Vaccinations will be done by the community nursing team.

Patients who we are unable to contact via SMS messaging due to no mobile number or change in contact details that we are unaware of, will be contacted by the practice via telephone, letter or

email in the coming week to offer both Flu and Covid vaccinations for adults or just the flu vaccination for under 18’s.

If you do not wish to have either vaccination this year, we ask for you to let us know either by responding through your invite link, sending us an admin query https://florey.accurx.com/p/H85114 or by letting us know when we call you, this will allow us to ensure your records are updated with this information and so we can remove you from our reminder Campaigns (SMS/Calls).

This does not stop you in the future of changing your mind and taking up the offer of the vaccines, it just stops us from sending or making opportunistic communications regarding the vaccinations.

If you are unable to attend our dedicated clinic dates, you can also book through the national systems for both Flu and Covid:

NHS App Messaging Service

You can now receive messages through the NHS App Messaging Service.

This is a convenient and secure way for the practice to send you messages about your care.

What to expect from messages

We will send you:

  • appointment reminders
  • changes to practice services
  • Health questionnaires

We will only send you a message if we need to contact you, for example if we have an update about your care.

We may continue to send you some information by SMS (text) message while we transition to using the NHS App Messaging Service.

If you do not want to receive messages from the NHS App Messaging Service

Contact the surgery to discuss your preferred contact method.

How to check if you have a message

You will receive messages, in 'View messages from your GP surgery and other NHS Services.'

The best way to keep up with your messages is to download the NHS App on Google Play or the App Store and turn on notifications.

To check your messages:

  1. Log in to the NHS app.
  2. Go to View your messages.
  3. Select View messages from your GP surgery and other NHS Services.
  4. Then select [GP surgery name].

Get NHS App notifications when we send you a message

To turn on notifications:

  1. Log in to the NHS app.
  2. Go to More.
  3. Select Account and settings.
  4. Then select Manage notifications.
  5. Use the toggle to turn notifications on or off.

You will see a new notification from the NHS App the next time we send you a message. Your notifications will tell you that you have a new message from your GP.

You will still receive our messages if your notifications are turned off, but you will not see a notification on your device when you have a new message.

Adult Proxy Access

I want someone to help me with my GP services

Do you need help managing your healthcare?

You can ask a trusted person to apply on your behalf using this service, if you are both aged 16 or over and both registered at the same GP surgery, which we are taking part in the trial. Talk to them about what you want them to be able to help you with, and give them the details they need to apply.

Invite your trusted person to find out more about applying for access to another patient's GP services on the NHS website.

This service is designed and run by the NHS, so your personal information is safe.

The NHS is trialling a new service where you can apply online for proxy access. You can only use this service if your GP surgery is taking part in this trial.

You will need to use your NHS login. If you do not have one yet, you can set one up as part of your application.

Important changes to care at Thurleigh Road Practice

As a valued member of our Practice, we wanted to inform you of some important changes to how care will be accessed at Thurleigh Road moving forwards.

Many of you may be aware of the current pressures on General Practice, not only at Thurleigh Road, but nationwide. Our practice population has grown to almost 15,000 patients, and the number of clinicians has decreased recently because of funding and the national shortage of GP’s. The overall demand for appointments has increased greatly and is at an all-time high and we understand how frustrating this is for our patients.

NHS England have recently published a plan to aid recovery of Primary Care. The plan stipulates that all patients should receive an assessment of need when they contact the practice and that an appropriate appointment should be booked, preferably within a two week time frame of the contact.

Our priority is to make sure that we attend to patients who require urgent medical attention before attending to patients with more routine issues. In order for the Practice to achieve this and adhere to the new plan, it will be necessary to introduce an appointment booking system based on clinical need. The most effective way we can achieve this is to adopt online triage.

From Monday 10th July, we request that all enquiries for an appointment are made online. From our website homepage, please select the ‘Submit a new request’ option and if you require an appointment select ‘I want help for a medical issue’.  You will then need to fill in an online form, which provides all the information required to safely triage the enquiry.  The first person to review the request will be a clinician, who will then decide upon the appropriate course of action. This could be a face-to-face or phone appointment with a member of our multidisciplinary clinical team, or perhaps redirection to another provider such as a local pharmacist or primary eye care service.

We appreciate that not everyone may have access to our website. In this case, we will be happy to receive your phone call and one of our Clinical Support team will assist you to complete the form. Our vulnerable patients will continue to be welcome in reception in addition.

The medical online request form will be available from 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, or until the Practice has reached capacity. If this is the case, you will be notified and redirected to another service.  For urgent issues please continue to telephone the practice. Outside of these hours please call 111 as you have done in the past.

We hope that you understand the need for change. Your support in helping us to deliver the right care, in the right place and at the right time, is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions or need any advice on how to complete an online request, or the general process moving forward, please feel free to speak to a member of staff who would be happy to help.

In appreciation of your continued cooperation.

Practice update regarding Emails from patients

Dear Patients,

We would like to inform you all that as of the 1st May 2023 the practice will no longer be accepting emails from patients.  Any patient emails received from this date will not be read or actioned.

The good news is we already have a system in place to deal with all your queries, be it a non-urgent medical question or just an administration query e.g. fit note, repeat prescription requests, result.

All you need to do is fill out a short and simple form online. The new system allows us to quickly assess and assign the query to the correct team. We will then respond either with SMS messaging or email in order to best resolve the query.

You can start using this form now by going to our website and clicking on ‘Submit a new request’ located on our home page.

Many thanks in advance for your co-operation.
